Can Credit Union Member Statements Feature Marketing Materials?

Jul 10, 2019

Credit union member statements keep your members informed about their finances. But can they do more?

Few things are more satisfying than using one item for two purposes. Frisbees make great impromptu dog bowls, a cozy onesie doubles as a last-minute Halloween costume, and sometimes a beer does a pretty good impression of a post-workout sports drink.

So, why let other things have all the fun? Credit union member statements can do more than just provide useful financial information—they can also show off your best products and services.

Strengthen Your Relationship with Your Members

While sometimes we might wish otherwise, most people aren’t looking to develop a deep connection with their credit union. Usually, they’re just looking for the best place to do their banking.

Promoting member engagement is a good way to strengthen a credit union’s relationship with their members, though. One of the best ways is to continue to offer them relevant services.

After all, if you’ve already gone through the trouble of attracting a member, you’ll want to keep them around. By staying in front of your members with useful products and services, you can remind them that you have their best interests at heart.

Have they been looking at new cars, or are their kids getting close to soccer age? Time to show them your auto loan rates. Are they looking for long-term investment opportunities? Flash your CD rates. Demonstrate your value and what you bring to the table, and they’ll stick with you for it.

Make a Statement… With Your Statement

Marketing teams work hard. One of the more difficult aspects of marketing is reaching the right people.

For example, email campaigns have notoriously low click-through rates, and banner ads struggle against adblockers.

With credit union member statements, you know that every member in your credit union receives them. There’s plenty of room on those sheets to pull double duty and advertise that new great thing you’ve got.

As a bonus, remember that members pay far closer attention to their statements than they do to most marketing materials. By putting relevant ads and featured services next to their critical financial information, you’ll be able to reach a larger audience than usual.

What Kind of Marketing Materials Fit on Member Statements?

The sky is not the limit here—credit union member statements are not really about marketing. However, you can include quite a few useful things.

To get an idea about what sorts of things you might be able to fit onto your member statements, think about the following:

  • Text
  • Images
  • Graphs
  • Charts
  • Contact information

Above are, of course, just ideas. There’s a lot of potential to be tapped into. With a little strategy, your credit union member statements could seamlessly pull double-duty as an effective marketing tool.

How Can My Credit Union Start Doing This?

If you want to start including marketing materials on your credit union’s member statements, you have two options.

First, you can work internally to start including the kinds of advertisements and promotions that you’d like to feature. Second, you can work with a statement vendor and let them handle the heavy lifting.
